Golf Tips

For Women

by Tina Tombs

Golf season is in full swing, ladies here’s your opportunity to enjoy the weather, enjoy some out-and-about time and enjoy a good round of golf. If you’re a new golfer however, the game can be downright frustrating. I’ve been playing golf since I was 13 years old, and I can tell you I literally did whatever I could to get that little white ball in that little hole with the fewest strokes possible.

After 17 years on the LPGA tour and five years as an Instructor at the Arizona Biltmore Resort, I can honestly say I have learned a thing or two. Take advantage of tips and tricks I’ve picked up along the way to help you experience a much more successful start of the season:

Learn the Fundamentals of Golf. It is very important to get instruction and get your fundamentals right from the very beginning. I like to start off by checking grip, posture and alignment with the ball. These are inclusive in the setup and are the foundation of a good golf swing. If you keep these in check most of the season, you will be able to build from there and, in time, your swing will become more consistent. In my own game, I check these fundamentals often. While I practice, I only swing at 75 to 80 percent of my full swing strength to find my balance, tempo and rhythm.

Incorporate a Fitness Program. I recommend a good stretching or fitness program to prevent injuries. It also will improve your endurance, strength and power in your golf swings. Then, you can hit the golf ball further with less effort. I love watching my students experience this. It’s also no coincidence many professional and champion golfers incorporate a fitness routine in their training.

Practice Your Short Game: Do this as often as you can. This will include: chipping, pitching and putting. Practicing your short game will give you a better feel for your game and will help you develop timing and rhythm for your golf swing. Ask an instructor about specific chipping and putting drills. If you have the time to practice, I recommend spending two-thirds of your time on your short game.

Check Your Equipment: Sounds elementary, but you might be surprised to know how many people are using the wrong size clubs. Make sure the specifications are right for you and your game. And, get your grips changed regularly, at least twice a year, depending on how often you play. New grips will really make a difference in your short game because they will give you a softer feel. Don’t forget to check your lies and lofts. Irons are made from soft metals that can bend slightly, throwing off your whole game. These clubs should be adjusted and maintained on a regular basis.

Let It Fly! Lastly, and most importantly, play with family, friends and business associates and have fun. Hit it high and Let it FLY!
